Mistress Mary

I'm a puppy, as you see,

And this is Mistress Mary,

She is exceedingly fond of me,

In a manner most contrary.

For whenever I want to walk,

She insists that I must lie by,

And wraps me up tight in her pinny white,

And tells me to go bye-bye!

Oh Mistress Mary,

Why are you so contrary?

If you love me true,

As you say you do,

Why are you so contrary?

But whenever I want to sleep,

And the weather is cold and icy,

And basket and rug are warm and snug,

And the fire if nicey picey,

She takes me out, though I say "no, no".

Down to the frozen river,

And tells me to slide for an hour or so,

And watches me shake and shiver.

Oh Mistress Mary,

Why are you so contrary?

If you love me true,

As you say you do,

Why are you so contrary?

Fido's ill, he's caught a cold,

This is how 'twas caught,

I'm told.
